A New Type of Rosary

We loved hearing from Everyday Prayer Co. Founder Brennan Costello about his cool new take on the rosary.

theYCW: Tell us about the genesis of Everyday Prayer Company. Where did you get the idea and how did you get started?

Brennan: It originally started last Lent when I made a commitment to learn the rosary. I had never made the rosary a part of my prayer life before that. It was taught to me a little bit but it wasn’t until I was in a men’s group when they talked about a rosary book that I felt called to learn more about it.

I started saying it every day and memorized the mysteries, and then I looked for a way to build a product from it. I teach a class at an entrepreneur program so that’s where my mind goes: I want to build a business around this, particularly on what I’m passionate about. There’s a couple different rosary card ideas out there, but Everyday Prayer Co is about building something beautiful, simple, and super convenient. Convenience was the goal, and it fits right in your wallet.

I would love to offer Catholics the opportunity to learn more about the rosary because I think it’s so useful for people who pray the rosary everyday, and I want to make it more available.

theYCW: What's the future look like for EPC? What's your next steps or dreams for it?

Brennan: I would love to offer Catholics the opportunity to learn more about the rosary because I think it’s so useful for people who pray the rosary everyday, and I want to make it more available. I don’t know what that looks like specifically, but I want to get it in the hands of more people. I dream about schools using these rosary cards as a fundraiser and could even put their logo at the middle of the rosary card. We also just launched a new product, a prayer journal to help people further participate in the Mass.

theYCW: In your own words, how can praying the rosary draw us closer to God?

Brennan: I think the rosary works well when you get the prayers memorized because it becomes a background rhythm to what’s actually happening when you pray the rosary, which is being with God and thinking about God, whether that’s praying the mysteries or sitting and being with him and letting the words float past you almost like a river, and you find yourself meditating on Jesus. I’m still learning to do that, but that’s when the rosary is best used.

theYCW: And any advice for those who have always been hesitant or unmotivated to pray the rosary?

Brennan: I think what did it for me is I have to wrap my head around something first and then try it. The rosary looks like a bunch of repititious prayers, and you wonder, “How does this work?” But once I wrapped my head around where it came from and that it’s a gift that was given to us, and Jesus wants us to pray it, it becomes such a powerful way to meditate on Him. We have printable guides on the website to help you with this. Just try from the beginning to start thinking about Jesus and let the words float by you. Also, take some friends to do it with you, even if it’s weird at first, because I think it was meant to be prayed in community.
